How to Navigate Gammel's Laws | How to Cite Gammel's Laws How to Navigate Gammel's Laws: Indexes & Numbering SystemsThere are two sets of indexes for Gammel's Laws, an external book referring to volumes 1-12 and internal indexes following specific chapters. Internal IndexesGammel's Laws are a compilation of Texas historical documents, many of which have attached indexes. The page numbers in these attached indexes refer to the document page numbering system.
Analytical Index to the Laws of Texas 1828-1905 C.W. Raines, who helped Gammel compile the original ten volumes, created an analytical index to the first twelve volumes (although volumes 11 and 12 had not yet been printed). The Analytical Index is alphabetical, with references arranged within each word by occurrence in the 12 volumes. The reference numbers refer to volume, volume page numbers, and year.
Each page has a page number at the top and at the bottom. The top numbers are document page numbers and the bottom numbers are volume page numbers. Volume NumbersThe page numbers at the bottom of each page are sequential throughout the volume. The Analytical Index for Volumes 1-12 uses the volume page numbers for reference. Document NumbersThe page numbers at the top of the page are sequential through the chapter only. Many of the chapters containing general or special laws are followed by an index for that chapter. The internal indexes are numbered using the document numbers.
